Macon’s Historic Pleasant Hill Neighborhood is a black community of exceptional prominence in Middle Georgia and the U.S. Southern region. It is a beautiful area known for continually having “pleasant” breezes and full of history. Developed from the 1870’s up through the 1930’s, Pleasant Hill consisted mostly of formerly enslaved black people. In a short time they rose to service in Macon, becoming homeowners and professionals including educators, gardeners, housekeepers, skilled carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, plasterers and mechanics, doctors, dentists, attorneys, musicians, business owners and ministers.
